Burbank First Baptist Church News

What is it like to Pastor a small rural community church? It is a blessing, is my first response. When I was called into ministry over 38 years ago, I wondered if God knew what He was doing. I didn’t feel like I was educated enough to handle all the requirements of ministry. God pointed me to Oklahoma Baptist University. They provided a way for someone to obtain a Pastoral Ministry diploma through classes led by local ministers. It also placed me in touch with friends that would be able to assist me as I grew in my faith. Many of these friends have now gone on to be with the Lord. The most important thing I have learned is to be available for others when they call on me for advice. Prayer and Bible Study has been a great avenue to discovering how God wanted me to be supportive to others. This calling is not just a denominational calling. This past week I have been blessed to pray for someone of the Catholic faith who is having health issues. I was approached by another couple about doing a marriage for them. The primary concern on their part was whether they needed to be a church member. I offered myself to provide some marriage counseling to assist them in their future marriage plans. I believe that the Lord gives me some basis for qualification since my wife and I have been married 56+ years. Thank you, Jesus, for being there for us during this calling. I truly believe that God did not just call me to be Pastor to a few people in a local church. The people of Burbank and others in the surrounding communities know that they can call me when the need arises. The Apostle Paul’s encouragement to his friends in Philippi sums up the what the Lord will do for each of us. Philippians 4:19, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” It is not just what each of us can do but what Jesus Christ can do through us.

There are no teams on a bye this week, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about the topic. Backing teams after their bye makes sense. With an extra week to prepare, they should have an advantage. But so far, those teams are 2-4 both straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS). The six teams who were on a bye last week: Carolina, Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, the Jets and Tennessee.

This week’s cat of the week is the adorable lady, Mia. Mia is a 2 yearold cat who has been with the Northern Oklahoma Humane Society since June. She was surrendered on June 28 and has since been waiting for someone to come take her home. Mia is the definition of a woman in charge. She is the queen of the castle and makes it clear that she is the one in charge. Mia can be a very sweet cat, showing love to her loyal subjects when she feels the need, but she also is very clear when she needs her ‘me time.’ When she first arrived at the Northern Oklahoma Humane Society, she was less than pleasant to her subjects, but quickly learned that it is easier to get what she wants when it comes with a cute meow. She has also learned that she thoroughly enjoys the occasional scratch behind the ear and being pet. In all seriousness, Mia is a very independent cat. She does like to be loved one, but she will let you know when she has had enough. She is waiting on her forever home, but in the mean time, she will continue to watch out the widow for her forever family to pull into the parking lot.
