Body
OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Bill Coleman, R-Ponca City, released the following statement Friday after the governor announced a plan to advance sports betting in Oklahoma. Coleman is the Senate principal author of House Bill 1027, along with Rep. Ken Luttrell, to legalize sports betting in the state. The bill was introduced during the 2023 legislative session where it received House approval and will be available for further consideration by the Senate when session convenes in February.

Burbank First Baptist Church News

The last three months of the calendar year appear to be one of the busiest times of the year for Burbank First Baptist. In October we provide a meal for the Northern Oklahoma College Baptist Collegiate Ministry. We are blessed to provide a ministry to the children of the surrounding community with a Fall Festival. Last Monday evening there were well over 100 adults and children gathered in the Burbank Alumni building for a time of food, games, and wonderful fellowship. In November, we participate in the Annual Burbank Community Thanksgiving meal. It is held on the Thursday before Thanksgiving Day at 6 pm. Every year there have been between 80 to 125 people in attendance. Attendance is controlled by the weather pattern. If anyone needs a food basket for Thanksgiving the church family tries to fulfill that need. In December, we hold an annual Children’s Christmas program the Sunday before Christmas. It has always been a well-attended activity each year. This year we may need to have it a week earlier due to Christmas being on Monday. God has blessed our fellowship with loving and caring people. I am sure that we could always do more to inspire others to come and be a part of a vibrant gathering. We are a work-in-progress as we look at additional ways to meet people’s needs. I found a couple of scripture verses that suggest that giving and receiving go hand and hand. The Apostle Paul wrote to his friends at Corinth in 2 Corinthians 8:13-14, “For I do not mean that others should be eased and burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness.” As we have the opportunity to bless others, we must remember that they in return may provide a blessing to us. Serve the Lord with gladness my friends.

Capitol Considerations

Body
It’s time to shift our focus once again in the Legislature – now that the interim studies are complete, it’s time to begin requesting and filing bills. We have until Dec. 8 to request any more bills we want heard next session. These will be added to the measures still alive from this past session. As long as a bill wasn’t voted down, it can be considered in the upcoming session, like Rep. Luttrell’s and my House Bill 1027 to legalize sports betting in Oklahoma. Gov. Stitt surprisingly released his own plan this week to expand sports betting in the state even though he has never inquired about or shown support of our legislation. I’m anxious to review his plan further and find out if he’s reached out or collaborated with the tribal nations. Lack of coordination between the executive branch and tribal leadership was the main reason our bill stalled this session, so we’re hopeful the governor will work in good faith with all involved parties on this important economic issue.

Millions of sterile fruit flies are being dropped on LA to fight an infestation

LOS ANGELES — The citrus trees at C&S Nursery in Baldwin Hills would normally be full of passionfruit, kumquats and other fruits this time of year. But last month, employees stripped dozens of them and placed them at the rear of the lot, away from the public, as part of an all-out quarantine effort aimed at eradicating one of the most destructive pests in the world: the Mediterranean fruit fly.
