This week’s cat of the week is Gus, the 5, nearly 6, year old domestic shorthair that has captured the hearts of many at Northern Oklahoma Humane Society. When he first arrived at Northern Oklahoma Humane Society in December, many of the volunteers and employees were very worried about him. He constantly hid in his cage, did not want to be around people, and could be quite prickly when proved. They believed that the situation he had come from, his health issues, and his overall anxiety about being in the shelter would make him regress even more. Gus proved everyone wrong though, and they couldn’t be more happy about it. Now, Gus is probably one of the most outgoing cats in the shelter, constantly wanting love and attention. Recently, he even upgraded from his cage and hiding spot of the big open rooms where he spends the day curled up in a soft bed staring out the window. Just by looking at photos of him from the beginning of his stay to now, shows just how much he has come out of his shell. While my own opinion has no real regard, Gus has quickly become my absolute favorite cat in the shelter at the moment. He is waiting for his chance at a forever home. Gus stood out because of his perseverance and loving personality. Gus is truly the perfect cat. Unfortunately, Gus has been diagnosed as FIV+ which is an immunodeficiency virus. Cats infected with this will have symptoms of recurrent illnesses such as runny nose or sneezing, inflammations of the eyes or skin, and more, but Gus has shown great improvements over the last few months. There is no true cure for FIV and it will be something that Gus will have for the rest of his life, but despite of his condition, Gus won’t let anything hold him back from finding a family and a home. Because of his condition, it is safer if Gus is an only cat to minimize the risk of this virus spreading. Gus is so incredibly strong, funny, and loving. His greatest wish is to have a family he can love and be loved by.
