By 2040, there will be 29.5 million new cancer cases each year in the United States, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The good news? There’s still time to prevent many of these cases by adopting healthy lifestyle patterns.

Well what do you know? It’s that time of the year again when multiple news items come up around the same time and I have to make a choice on what I want to cover. So instead of choosing, how about we have a grab bag special covering all the topics I want to address, but might not be worthy of a full column on its own.

This week’s cat of the week is Popeye, the 3 year old domestic longhair that you see pictured. Popeye has been with the Northern Oklahoma Humane Society since the beginning of May and he is looking for his second chance at a forever home. Popeye stood out because of his adorable face and his wonderful personality. Popeye has truly never met a stranger and he becomes best friends with everyone he meets. He is the kind of cat that follows you around looking for attention and love. Popeye is honestly a perfect cat. He loves people, treats, and is good in new environments. He, much like a dog, will itch with his back legs if you rub the itchy spot on his ears and he doesn’t even mind being picked up and carried. Unfortunately, Popeye has been diagnosed as FIV+, which is an immunodeficiency virus. Cats infected with this often have symptoms of recurrent illnesses such as runny nose or sneezing, inflammations of the eyes or skin, and more. There is no true cure for FIV and it will be something that Popeye will fight for the rest of his life. That being said, FIV is not necessarily a death sentence. Many cats live with this virus, it is just apart of their lives. Regardless of this diagnosis, Popeye needs a home and people who love him. Because of his condition, it is safer if Popeye is the only cat in the household to minimize the risk of the virus spreading to other vats. Popeye is so incredibly sweet and loving and he is just waiting for a family to come along who will be able to keep him and take care of him.

INGREDIENTS • 1 can (14.75 ounces) salmon, drained • 1 egg • 1 slice of whole wheat bread, shredded, or 5 saltine crackers, crushed • 3 green onions (including the green stems) or 1/3 cup white onion (chopped fine) (about 1/3 medium onion) • 1 medium clove garlic, minced or 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder • Dash ground black pepper • 1/2 teaspoon seasoning (paprika, chili powder, or dill weed) • 2 teaspoons oil (canola or vegetable) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Remove any large bones and skin from salmon.

THE CULINARY Academy at Pioneer Technology Center (PTC) allowed 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students to enter the world of food preparation with Brenda Pollak as their instructor. They learned skills to create yummy treats.
