Wildcat swimmers qualify for state

JENKS -- Four individuals and two relay teams from the Ponca City Wildcats qualified for the Class 6A State Meet during the Regional Meet Saturday in the Jenks Aquatic Center.

Qualifying in two separate events each were Simone Villarruel and Max Engster. Tayler Bennett and Hayden Jones each qualified in one event. Also making the state meet roster were the boys 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Heather Harris is the Ponca City head swim coach. There were some members of the Ponca City team unable to participate in the Regionals due to COVID-19 quarantines.

On the girls’ side, Villarruel finished seventh in both the 50-freestyle and 100 backstroke. Her state qualifying time in the 50 free was :26.31 seconds and her time im the 100 backstroke was 1:05.06.

Bennett finished 19th in the 500 freestyle and her state qualifying time was 5:59.9.

Other girls participating in the regionals were Kailee Payne, who was 34th in the 50 free and 35th in the 100 free; Lindsey Alverez, who finished 36th in the 50 free and 38th in the 100 free. Bennett was 16th in the 200 freestyle, the 200 freestyle relay team finished 11th and the 400 free style relay team finished 10th.

For the boys, the 200 free relay team finished 6th with the state qualifying time of 1:38.68 and the 400 free relay team finished 8th with the state qualifying time of 3:47.16..

Engster was 9th in the 50 free with the state qualifying time of :23.43 and he was 10th in the 100 free with the state qualifying time of :52.02.

Jones was 11th in the 200 free with a state qualifying time of 2:02.42. He also finished 17th in the 100 butterfly.

Other boys who competed in the Regionals were Tanner Estes, who was 14th in the 100 backstroke and 20th in the 200 Individual Medley; Kyle King, who was 14th in the 100 freestyle and 15th in the 100 breaststroke; Brady Ladner, who was 20th in the 200 free and 17th in the 100 free; Riley Ladner, who was 25th in the 100 free and 22nd in the 100 backstroke; Tristin Feathers, who was 28th in the 50 free and 32nd in the 100 breaststroke and Coby Allensworth, who was 23rd in the 50 free and 31st in the 200 free.

The boys 200 medley relay team was 11th.

The dates for the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association state meet have been set at Feb. 19-20 and 22-23. It will be in Edmond.
