Jan. 10—STILLWATER — Boo Lewallen wasn’t in the mood to stand around on Sunday.

Oklahoma State’s 149-pound senior came out on the attack in his two wrestling matches at Gallagher-Iba Arena, racking up points and winning both by technical fall as the sixthranked Cowboys rolled over a pair of opponents in a seasonopening doubleheader.

Oklahoma State opened the day with a 32-9 win over Chattanooga and closed it out with a 29-8 win over Oregon State.

Lewallen defeated Oregon State’s Lane Stigall with an 18-3 technical fall in the first period, a sign of how the senior plans to attack his opponents this season.

“I take pride in the effort I give every single day,” Lewallen said. “Ultimately, it goes back to that commitment that I make to myself, that I’m gonna move my feet. I wanna make sure I’m not standing around and hanging in tie-ups. If I’m doing that, points are gonna be put up on the board.

“I just want to continue keeping my intensity up.”

At 141 pounds, Kaid Brock was back on the mat for the first time in nearly two years because of injuries. After winning by forfeit against Chattanooga, Brock finally got into action with an 8-4 victory over Oregon State’s Grant Willits.

“He hasn’t competed in a long time,” OSU coach John Smith said. “For Kaid, that was a good start to get that kind of test.”

On the topic of good starts, some Cowboy careers began strong on Sunday. Three true freshmen — Trevor Mastrogiovanni, Dustin Plott and AJ Ferrari — each swept the first two matches of their college careers.

At 125 pounds, Mastrogiovanni used a late takedown for a 7-4 win over Oregon State’s Brandon Kaylor to get that dual started strong. Plott, at 174 pounds, and Ferrari, at 197, each had two bonus-point victories.

“All three of them have had long years leading up to this point,” Smith said. “Not a lot of wrestling, because of injuries. So that was a little bit of a concern coming into it. But I was pleased with the effort. It was a good start for all three of them.

“We’re gonna be able to identify real quickly that they’ve got to get a little stronger, a little tougher, and they’ve got to build a little longer on their endurance.”

Plott, from Tuttle, enjoyed his first Cowboy experience in the arena where he has watched many duals.

“It was amazing,” Plott said. “Growing up coming to duals, I’ve always dreamed of being out there, being in the situation I was in today. I’m very grateful to be part of this program and wrestle today.

“I was just trying to enjoy the moment, wrestle and have fun.”

With the two dual victories on Sunday, Smith moved into fourth place on the all-time Division I coaching wins list with 441, passing former Oklahoma State wrestler J Robinson, who had 440 dual wins at Minnesota. Rider’s Gary Taylor is in third place on the list with 442, giving Smith the chance to climb another rung next weekend when the Cowboys take part in two duals at Little Rock.

“It takes a lot of good athletes to be able to do something like that,” Smith said. “So I credit my past athletes and Oklahoma State’s past athletes here as wrestlers.

“It’s a great honor, and I’m glad I’m gonna get to share it with this team.”
