Capitol Considerations

Body
While most of us in the Senate support lowering the personal income tax in a fiscally responsible, methodical way, this special session call was unnecessary. It is our constitutional duty to pass new laws or amend current ones during the regular legislative session, which runs from February to the end of May. We use the interim to conduct studies, have working groups and other committees to take deeper dives into more complicated issues. Tax reform is a perfect example.

Not having a House speaker is threatening these key areas

Body
WASHINGTON — Work in Congress has ground to a halt as Republicans search for a new speaker, threatening Ukraine aid and delaying consequential business legislation. Among the items now stalled are a measure to extend federal banking protections to marijuana companies operating in states where the drug is legal and negotiations to restore tax breaks for business spending on research and development.

Burbank First Baptist Church News

Body
Burbank has a history like any other great community in Kay, Grant, or Osage county. My first contact with the church family in Burbank was when I first received the call to preach. I contacted Cliff Fite, our Director of Missions for Kay Baptist Association, to ask if anyone needs a pulpit supply preacher in the Association. He directed me to First Baptist of Burbank. They needed someone to preach when their Pastor was going to be gone for one Sunday. I do not remember much about how many people were there. I do remember being asked by the Brock family to stay and eat at their home afterwards. It was a great experience for a young minister to find out how well God’s people share with others. Burbank has been blessed with many wonderful families over the years. Many times, I have discovered while ministering to families in other communities while doing weddings or funerals that someone formerly attended church at Burbank, First Baptist. There are several people that have great memories of their time while attending services there. I believe it is important for people to have a regular place of worship. Getting together with people of like faith and belief builds communities and strengthens their faith. I remember the words of a hymn that says, “People need the Lord; At the end of broken dreams; He’s the open door; When will we realize; People need the Lord.” Yes, my friends, people do need the Lord. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). There is a saying I heard years ago, “Believe and receive or doubt and do without.” Where do you practice your faith? How and when do you show others your belief? Attend the church of your choice and see if it doesn’t bring you closer to the Lord.

Quality Plants

Body
I’ve been around long enough to remember when vegetarian diets were all the rage. Now we call them plant-based. No matter what you call them, these diets replace meats with plants for protein. There are many studies that back up the health benefits of plant-based eating. But a word of caution from an observational study was published in the BMJ in 2020. The study found that a healthy plant-based diet was associated with lower blood pressure, but an unhealthy plant-based diet was not.

There’s some exciting news for Po-Hi students and the 2024 CatTale yearbook with Legacy Studios being the new district photographer. Some things won’t change, however. At the high school, all students, faculty, and staff will continue to have their yearbook pictures taken at no cost. As always, a variety of different portrait packages are available for purchase.
