Northern Oklahoma Humane Society welcomes new executive director

The Northern Oklahoma Humane Society welcomes their new Executive Director, Karlissa Archibeque. Karlissa has shown her extreme dedication to the NOKHS organization since 2020, acting as a volunteer, Board Member, and in 2022, Board President. In the last year she has played a crucial role in augmenting the impact of the Trap Neuter Return Program she helped initiate in 2020, which is now incredibly successful. With that program, Karlissa and her team of volunteers were able to spay and neuter over 1000 community cats in Kay County.

Kay County honors Treasurer Christi Kennedy in retirement

There was a festive atmosphere at the Kay County Treasurer’s office in Newkirk June 29. Employees from across the Kay County Administration Building and Extension Office gathered at 2 p.m. for punch, cake and cookies, wishing County Treasury Secretary Christi Kennedy the best of wishes as she seeks a new life in retirement.

June 22, 2023 Disturbance - At 12:16 am, the reporting party advised there were two people trying to fight her mom at 2201 N. 14th. The front door of the apartment was locked and they were trying to get through it. The parties have been separated.

Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions

WASHINGTON — In another major reversal, the Supreme Court on Thursday struck down affirmative action policies at colleges and universities that use race as a factor in deciding who is admitted. In a pair of decisions, the six conservative justices ruled that Harvard, the nation’s oldest private college, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the oldest state university, were illegally discriminating based on race and violating the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.
