The Jones Longhorns scored all the runs they would need in the second inning and went on to defeat the Ponca City summer baseball varsity 8-2 Tuesday.

Jones scored three runs in the second and added one in the third to lead 4-0. Ponca City narrowed the gap with two runs in the fifth, but Jones was able to score four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Hayden LeClair was the starting pitcher for the Wildcats. He worked two innings and gave up one hit and three earned runs. Isaiah Branstetter assumed the mound duties in the third inning and allowed four hits and one earned run in three innings. Kalon Covey pitched the final two frames and allowed six hits and four runs. None of the runs were earned.

Jones outhit Ponca City 11-3. Colton Jones, Covey and Titan Bute each had a single.

Cameron Schmitt drew a base on balls to start off the Ponca City fifth inning. The next hitter, Jones, singled moving Schmitt to second. Covey followed with a single to load the bases. Covey was forced out at second on a ground ball hit by Teegan Hodgson, but Schmitt scored the Wildcats’ first run.

Branstetter was hit by a pitch, again loading the bases. Jones scored as Branstetter was forced at second on a ground ball hit by Bute. LeClair walked to load the bases for the third time in the inning, but a ground out ended the threat.
