In Memoriam: William R. Gordon

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William R. Gordon, a beloved father, war veteran, and accomplished professional, who left this world at the age of 97. William and Mary lived in Ponca City, Oklahoma, for 41 years and were members of the 1st Presbyterian church, forging deep connections within the community. His life was marked by courage and honor, as he served bravely in the Army infantry during World War II, earning the Bronze Star for his exceptional dedication and valor on the battlefields of France.

Predeceased by his parents, Walter and Alice Gordon of Wichita, KS, and his younger sister Marica Krug, also of Wichita, William is survived by his loving wife Mary and their four children: Greg Gordon of McKinney, TX, Denise Williams of Houston, TX, Kathy Mertz of Dallas, TX, and Paula Stanwood of Denver, CO. Together, they formed a close-knit family filled with love, support, and enduring memories.

William leaves a living legacy through his eight grandchildren, three son-inlaw’s, one daughter-in-law, fourteen great-grandchildren, and five great-greatgrandchildren. Each generation carries forward the values and love instilled by this remarkable man.

After the war, William’s pursuit of knowledge led him to Wichita State University, where he graduated summa cum laude. In 1953, he embarked on a lifelong journey with Mary, building a family that became the cornerstone of his life.

William’s professional journey was equally remarkable. Beginning his career at IBM in sales, he later ascended to managerial positions, showcasing his business acumen and leadership skills. A pivotal moment came when he redirected his career to Continental Oil Company, where he eventually became the Vice President of the computer department, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. In 1987, he retired, concluding a distinguished career that spanned decades.

In 2010, William and Mary chose a new chapter, relocating from Ponca City, Oklahoma, to Dallas, where they continued to share their enduring love and create memories with friends and family. William Gordon will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but for the warmth of his character, the strength of his spirit, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, love, and a commitment to excellence that will be remembered for generations to come.
