The Woodland Cougars and the Tonkawa Buccaneers stayed within the ranks of the unbeaten Friday with victories on the road. The Cougars defeated Pawhuska 38-22 in a battle of Osage County schools and Tonkawa topped Blackwell 40-6 in a Kay County rivalry.

I was watching a sports channel’s scoreboard show recently and a couple of things jumped out at me. In the list of baseball scores was a game played by the Cleveland Guardians. That has been the name of Cleveland’s baseball team for more than a year, but it still sounds funny in my old ears. A little later scores from the NFL were being reported and a result from a game involving the Washington Commanders was mentioned. Again, Washington’s team has been known as the Commanders for awhile now, but hearing it said also sends strange messages to my brain.

Disruptive. Is there any other way to describe Tonkawa’s defense? No, they didn’t have any epic goal-line stands.
