Aug. 2—Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy didn’t want to waste anybody’s time early Wednesday morning. Stillwater’s weather was already scorching by then, less than three hours after sunrise. He and the group of reporters in front of him were glistening with beads of sweat.

Softball Lady Cats have lots of promise

The Ponca City Lady Cats softball team had a breakout season a year ago and Coach Jeneva Nelson is looking for more of the same this season. “Things will be a little bit tougher this year due to a harder schedule,” she said.

Sydney Hermann wins state amateur

Ponca City golfer Sydney Hermann won the championship trophy in last week’s 106th Oklahoma Women’s State Amateur golf tournament played at the Ponca City Country Club. Hermann is a fifth year senior at Dalton State (Ga.) College.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Less than a minute into the second half of Tuesday’s scoreless World Cup match between the U.S. and Portugal, a fire alarm sounded in Eden Park, accompanied by verbal instructions to leave the stadium immediately. Nobody went anywhere, but the warning, which continued for an annoying four minutes, seemed appropriate: the U.S. was closer than it had ever been to leaving a women’s World Cup during the group stage.
