MIDWEST CITY -- It is said that all good things must come to an end and that proved to be true for the Ponca City Lady Cats’ five-game winning streak.

The streak ended Tuesday night when the Midwest City Bombers topped the Lady Cats 61-52 in a conference game, also the final regular season game for Ponca City.

The score doesn’t indicate the closeness of the game as it was one of the largest leads Midwest City had all night. Ponca City jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the beginning all coming from the shooting of senior Emma Gertken. But then Midwest City rolled to a 8-2 run cutting the Lady Cat lead to 10-8. The Lady Bombers held a one-point, 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Ponca City came back to lead 29-25 at the half and then held a 41-38 lead at the end of three periods.

The Bombers scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to assume a small lead, and then the roof caved in on the Lady Cats as Midwest City scored three consecutive three-point baskets. The home team led 53-43 with three minutes to play.

In all Midwest City hit four long bombs in the fourth quarter, which incidentally were its first three-pointers of the game.

Midwest City is a very good team and brought a No. 4 ranking in Class 6A West Region with a 17-5 record. Midwest City defeated the Lady Cats 52-43 in a Jan. 13 game in Ponca City.

Gertken led the Lady Cats in scoring with 22 points. Also in double figures was Sarah Dingus with 15.

Kyra Allison, who normally is among the team’s scoring leaders was in foul trouble early, and scored only four points.

The loss drops Ponca City’s record to 11-12. The Lady Cats are scheduled to open Regional Tournament play Feb. 23 against Jenks at Booker T. Washington in Tulsa.
