SHAWNEE -- The Ponca City Lady Cats added a win to their season’s record Friday night by topping the Shawnee Wolves 41-37 in overtime.

Ponca City broke out in front and led 14-6 after one quarter. But then the Lady Cats experienced a cold spell in the second quarter as the Wolves outscored them 12-2 in the the period to lead 18-16 at the half.

The Lady Cats had a better third quarter, regaining the lead and outscoring Shawnee 11-5 in the period. The third quarter score was 27-23 in Ponca’s favor.

Shawnee kept the pressure on the Lady Cats and tied the score with three minutes left in the game. When regulation time ran out, the score was tied 33-33 necessitating an overtime period to decide the winner.

Ponca City took charge in the extra period outscoring Shawnee 8-4. Three critical free throws were made by Ponca City’s Lainie George to help enable the victory.

Emma Gertken led Ponca City’s scoring with 16 points. Kyra Allison added 14.

The win increased the Lady Cat’s season record to 2-6. After a winter break, Ponca City will return to action on Jan. 5 in the Ada Tournament.
