Lady Cats complete summer schedule

The Ponca City Lady Cats softball team this week completed a rather successful summer league schedule.

In 12 games, the Ponca City players won nine and lost three.

The summer league program began with a 6-0 victory over the Newkirk Lady Tigers on May 22. Ponca City scored one in the third and five in the fourth inning. They outhit Newkirk 10-2 in the four-inning game. Mashta Littlecook had two RBIs for the Lady Cats. Ashley Griffin was the winning pitcher. Madelyn Blackstar, Audrey Varner and Camila Bohon each had two hits.

Also on May 22, the Lady Cats topped Perry 3-2 in a four-inning game. Brianna Meyer was the winning pitcher. Perry outhit Ponca City 7-6. The Lady Cats scored one in the first inning and both teams scored twice in the fourth. Littlecook had two hits to lead Ponca City in batting.

On May 30, the Lady Cats won twice, defeating Stillwater 5-3 and Coyle 19-1. Against Stillwater Griffin was the winning pitcher. The Lady Cats had eight hits, with Jakia Colbert, Blackstar, and Varner each getting two. The Lady Cats scored early getting two runs in the first inning and three in the second. Stillwater had one run in the first and two in the fourth. Coyle scored one run in the first inning, but then Ponca City scored 19 unanswered runs to win the three-inning game. Meyer pitched two innings and was the winning pitcher. Colbert pitched an inning. Meyer, Littlecook, Caitlin Cooper and Bohon each had two of Ponca City’s 13 hits.

Frontier handed the Lady Cats their first loss on June 5, winning a 4-0 decision. Frontier scored three runs in the first inning and added another in the fourth. Meyer was the losing pitcher in the five-inning contest. Adisyn Ivers had two of Ponca City’s four hits. Ponca City bounced back on June 5 with an 8-0 victory over Glencoe. Griffin, who pitched 2.1 innings and Colbert, who pitched two-thirds of an inning combined for a no-hitter. Again Ivers had two hits to lead the Lady Cats seven-hit attack.

On June 12 Ponca City split in games with Morrison and Blackwell. The Lady Cats defeated Morrison 5-0, but lost to Blackwell 6-4. Meyer pitched all four innings against Morrison and shut it out with four hits. Bohon, Littlecook and Kadence Elliott each had two hits to lead the Lady Cat production. Blackwell scored four runs in the first inning and then added single runs in both the third and fourth frames. Ponca City had two runs in the second and fourth innings. Griffin pitched one inning and was tagged for the loss. Meyer pitched the final three innings. Baylee Stewart had two of the Lady Cats six hits.

On June 19, Ponca City won twice, defeating Coyle 6-0 and then avenging an earlier loss to Frontier 4-3. Fiona Schalk pitched a no-hitter against Coyle. Schalk, a transfer from Derby, Kan., struck out six during the four-inning game. Alex Zimmerschied and Cooper each had two hits in the 12-hit Lady Cat attack. In the game against Frontier, Ponca City scored three in the first inning and then one in the bottom of the third to win. Colbert, Cooper and Kenzi Bible, a transfer from Frontier, each had two of the Ponca City 10 hits. Meyer was the winning pitcher in the three-inning contest.

On June 26, the final day of the summer league schedule, Ponca City defeated Blackwell 7-4, but lost a 4-2 decision to Frontier. Against Blackwell, the Lady Cats scored two in the first nd five in the second. Trailing 7-1, Blackwell scored three in the final inning, but didn’t get enough to close the gap. Meyer pitched for Ponca City and gave up nine hits. Blackstar led with three hits. Against Frontier, Meyer pitched three innings and Kodi Elam pitched the final inning. Bible got two hits, including a home run, for Ponca City.

The Lady Cats will have an 100-inning game fundraiser July 11 and host a kids camp on July 12-13. The following week practice for the 2023 season will begin.
