Royals fans may remember former shortstop Alcides Escobar’s strong arm, as he was known to top 90 mph with his throws.

But when the Washington Nationals brought Escobar on to pitch/mop up against the Philadelphia Phillies last week, he was working at a speed that was just a tad slower.

In the Nationals’ 11-0 loss, the fastest pitch from Escobar topped out at a whopping 50.3 mph.

Escobar threw a scoreless inning, allowed a single and hit a batter. But this wasn’t quite like Noah Syndergaard buzzing Escobar with the first pitch of Game 3 of the 2015 World Series. Escobar’s pitch was clearly an accident.

The Phillies’ Alec Bohm was plunked by a pitch traveling 47.5 mph. The ball didn’t come near Bohm’s head as he was hit in the hip.

“Oh, that’s gonna leave a mark,”. Nationals broadcaster Bob Carpenter quipped. “Philly fans really upset. Everybody stay on your benches.”

In reality, Bohm and Escobar were both smiling. Here are the highlights from Escobar’s outing.

The Nationals called on Escobar again on Friday night, and this time he took the mound with one out in the eighth inning of the Braves’ 12-2 victory in Atlanta.

Escobar allowed two runs on two hits with a walk. He again worked in the 40 mph range but did “pump” one in there at 64.8 mph. The Braves’ Marcell Ozuna hit it for a single.
