EDMOND -- Both Ponca City varsity basketball teams won one out of three games in the Bruce Gray Invitational Tournament at Deer Creek High School over the weekend.

The Ponca City Lady Cats won their initial game in the tournament topping Stillwater 52-38 on Thursday. Friday, the Lady Cats dropped a 54-49 decision to Holland Hall of Tulsa and then in the third place game on Saturday, they lost 44-38 to Owasso.

In boys competition, the Ponca City Wildcats lost their opener 73-39 to Holland Hall, but then came back Friday to win a 59-58 thriller over Heritage Hall of Oklahoma City. In the fifth-place game Saturday, the Wildcats lost a 60-52 decision to Midwest City.

The Lady Cats led Holland Hall for much of the way Friday, with a 17-16 edge after one quarter and a 30-26 advantage at the half. Each team scored 10 points in the third quarter but then Holland Hall started pressuring the Lady Cats in the fourth quarter causing some turnovers that enabled Holland Hall to catch and pass Ponca City. Emma Gertken was the Lady Cats’ top scorer with 16 points. Others scoring were Sarah Dingus, 14; Kyra Allison, 9; Lainie George, 4; Calissa Collins, 4; and Kaytum Lively, 3.

On Saturday, Ponca City got off to an early lead and was ahead 10-4 after one quarter. Owasso took the lead in the second quarter and held a 21-16 advantage at the half and 30-29 lead after three quarters. Owasso forged into a bigger lead early in the fourth quarter, but Ponca City came on strong at the end and were trailing by four 42-38 in the waning seconds. The Lady Cats had several opportunities to narrow the lead even further, but their shot attempts wouldn’t fall. Again Gertken was the leading scorer with 11 points. Allison scored 10, Collins, 8; Dingus, 7 and Lively 2.

Gertken was named to the All-Tournament team.

A three-point basket by Mason Meador late in the game gave the Wildcats the one-point advantage over Heritage Hall that they would end with. Meador led Ponca City scoring with 17. Other scorers were Nic Thompson with 13; Luke Hollis with 12; Tay Moore with 11; and Trenton Monroy with 5.

Against Midwest City, the Wildcats trailed early and were behind 29-16 at the half. Meador again was the leading scorer with 19 and Moore had 11.

Deer Creek was the winner of the boys tournament, topping Edmond Memorial 67-47 in the championship game. Holland Hall won the girls tournament with a 37-35 victory over Harding Charter Prep.

Ponca City’s varsity teams have two away games this week. Tuesday they will travel to Guthrie and Friday to Putnam City West.
