Hunter Freeman drove home the winning run Monday as the Ponca City Wildcats claimed a 2-1 extra inning pitching duel victory over the Booker T. Washington Hornets.

In a district game played at the Po-Hi baseball field, the Wildcats scored one run in the fourth inning and then the game winning tally in the eighth. Booker T. Washington actually scored first picking up its sole run in the top of the fourth.

Brody Wicker was the winning Wildcat pitcher pitching all eight innings. Wicker gave up two hits and one earned run in his time on the pitching mound. Wicker struck out 10 and walked two.

Ponca City outhit the Hornets 6-2. Carson Williams had two hits for the Wildcats. Grant Harmon, Nate Harbeson, Gavin Cunningham and Freeman had one hit each.

In the fourth, Washington scored its run on a Ponca City error, a sacrifice bunt and a single.

Ponca City retaliated in the bottom of the fourth as Williams started things off with a single and stole second base. Harbeson walked. Williams advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on another passed ball.

In the eighth, Wicker walked with one out. Williams followed with a double moving Wicker to third. Washington then intentionally walked Tabron Stanton to load the bases. That set the stage for Freeman’s game winning hit. Freeman was credited with a single, but had not the winning run scored, he more than likely would have had extra bases with his hit as it went into the left center field gap.

Harbeson singled in thesecond, Cunningham singled in the third, and Harmon singled in the fifth.

The win was Ponca City’s second in a row and brings the Wildcats’ record to 6-19. The Wildcats and BTW were scheduled to play again Tuesday night in Tulsa.
