Baseball Wildcats pick up two wins

PUTNAM CITY -- The Ponca City Wildcats earned backto- back victories Friday and Saturday in the NW Optimist Tournament.

On Friday Ponca City defeated Putnam City West 8-1 and on Saturday the Wildcats outlasted Putnam City Original 12-11.

Against Putnam West, the Wildcats led throughout, scored two runs in the second, one in the third, two in the fifth, two more in the sixth and one in the seventh. West scored its lone run in the bottom of t he sixth.

Brody Wicker was the starting pitcher for Ponca City. He pitched two innings, giving up one hit and striking out two. Colton Jones pitched the final five innings for the Wildcats. He allowed four hits, one run and struck out seven.

Ponca City had the edge in hits, 6-5. Aidan Howard led the way for the Wildcats at the plate, garnering two hits. WIth one hit each were Teegan Hodgson, Jaxon Testa, Wicker and Grant Harmon. Howard had a double and Wicker’s hit was a triple.

Wicker, Titan Bute, Isaiah Branstetter, Jacob Leonard and Howard each had an RBI.

In Saturday’s game, Ponca City scored six runs in the second inning and after Putnam City score three in the bottom half of the inning, added six more in the third to lead 12-3. However, Putnam City scored seven in the bottom of the third to make a close game out of it and then added another run in the fourth to make things even tighter. Neither team scored in the fifth, which was the final frame.

Putnam City outhit Ponca City 10-8, but committed seven errors in the game. Jones and Wicker each had two hits for the Wildcats. With one hit each were Dalton White, Testa, Hodgson, and Branstetter. Wicker, Hodgson and Branstetter each had doubles. Jones had three RBI’s , Wicker and Branstetter each had two RBIs and Hodgson had one.

Howard was the starting pitcher for Ponca City. He pitched two and one-third innings, giving up five hits, five earned runs and striking out three. Jackson Hunt relieved in the third and he allowed one hit and four earned runs. Titan Bute pitched one inning had gave up three hts and one run and Testa pitched one and two-thirds innings to give up one hit. Testa was credited with a save.

The two wins boost Ponca City’s record to 8-20. Games with Owasso are on the schedule for Monday and Tuesday, with Monday’s game in Ponca City and Tuesday’s in Owasso.
