When one thinks of the term “Hispanic”, what do they think? Could it be their intense work ethic? Maybe their religious beliefs? Is the word only a demographic to them? Hispanic life carries unforgettable life experiences. From long, hard labor to enormous families dancing to live mariachi bands, Hispanic life always provides new adventures. Many lessons have been learned in the process. Growing up Hispanic has shown me many important moments in my life.

I have never been away from family. Whether it was trick or treating as a baby or being put to work at 6, they were always there. My family’s constant presence introduced me to new activities. Growing under my parents’ guidance gave me the perfect mixture of character. I found myself feeding horses with my father and doing house chores with my mother. They showed me how to have fun and be efficient. Everything felt joyous with my parents no matter the situation. Strong family ties fuel me to strive for success. I now manage a bait shop and go to school full time. As busy as life gets, remembering where I come from always makes it rewarding and worthwhile. I feel under control when large tasks are presented to me, thanks to my upbringing.

Family celebrations are very common in Hispanic culture. My family have attended countless celebrations. These gatherings bring relatives from the U.S and Mexico. A live Mexican band usually plays, and everyone has a great time catching up with one another. Loving each other in our culture brings out the best of ourselves. Love allows the family name to live on forever. When a birthday is observed, we celebrate with a packed driveway.

Family roots hold a large portion of my heart. Previous relatives lived with nothing except a cold adobe home. I often visit rural Mexico, where family resides. These groups have far less luxuries than family here in the U.S. We donate to kin and do whatever is possible to help them live a better life. Since we are fortunate enough to live the American life, we stay humble and never forget where we came from. Our previous struggles keep us connected. I will never take my life for granted. If we want something, we pursue it then thank the outcomes. Living in the U.S has shown me more opportunity than most have, so I will always appreciate my position.

My life has taught me many lessons. I wish for others to recognize these experiences and apply them to their lives. I cherish what I have and strive for what I don’t. Many others can love the environment they do not care for. This allows for them to do more in their lives and embrace who they are. Much can be learned in the process. Family and roots help people reach their inner consciousness so they can grow and be better people. What can possibly be better than one achieving a desired status through love and family?
