Pioneer Genealogical Society will meet Monday, July 11, at 7 pm in the Ponca City Library. The public is welcome. Since 1935 the Ponca City Library has always been a community hub, a place for studying, reading, browsing books and showing priceless art. Who remembers the summer reading programs?

PGS President Jerry Cathey will be narrating an archive of slides from 1983-4 about the history of the library. There are pictures of the librarians, the patrons of all ages and other Library activities. Can you identify these familiar faces?

One young patron of the 60s was teenager Argus Hamilton. Before he became the Will Rogers of the Baby Boom (per Robin Williams) and appeared on The Comedy Store 20 times, he would trot over from East Junior High to do homework. However he was so active librarian Mary Loney always made him run around the block 3 times before he could sit down.

Then there are the clothes, hairstyles, publications and services that seem light years ago. It should be fun to recall them.

Jerry will also cover the Library expansion that began in 1987. The planning committee including Charles Hollar, Dr Mathews, Mayor John Raley, Madeline Peel and Jane Northcutt worked tirelessly to bring about the $1.6 million addition. How did they manage to match the 1935 bricks flawlessly?

PGS meets monthly to revisit local history and help others grow their family trees. For further information, contact Jerry Cathey at cathejerry3@gmail.com
