Guthrie curator to speak at Ponca City Library

A program on Oklahoma’s origin story will be held during the Pioneer Genealogical Society’s meeting on Monday, July 10 at the Ponca City Library at 7 pm. The public is invited to attend this program will delve into how Oklahoma entered into statehood.

The event’s speaker will be Erin Brown, curator of OHS Collections at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum in Guthrie. Brown possesses a BA in history museum studies and a MFA in media design. She is a public speaker, writer, and creator of museum exhibits including one on Victorian etiquette, patent medicines, corsets, and Oklahoma African- American history.

Brown has served on the Board of Mountain Plains Museum Association, an group that provides services for a 10 state area; she has served as chairman of the Historic Townsite Committee in Guthrie; and as a representative to Emerging Museum Professionals.

The Pioneer Genealogical Society (PGS) has met monthly for 52 years since their inception in 1971 with a focus on family and local history. The group takes their name from the Pioneer Woman Statue that was erected in Ponca City in 1930.

They focus primarily on Kay County, but have limited information related to surrounding counties including Osage, Pawnee, Noble, and Grant counties, and two Kansas counties: Sumner and Cowley.

The group meets monthly at the Ponca City Library, and also answers queries, publishes a quarterly newsletter, compile genealogical records, and provide a mentoring program for genealogy assistance.
