Blackwell Animal Control had big news this month when they announced that, with the help of Blackwell Animal Hospital, they were going to be able to have every shelter animal fully vetted by the time they left their care. This means that not only will they continue to vaccinate each animal, but they will also be able to have them spayed and neutered before they ever leave the shelter. This is very exciting news for the Animal Control Officers Yinger and Parson.

Too often, these ACOs work their hardest to save these animals and find them good homes, only for them to get pregnant once they are adopted and then more babies are brought to the shelter.

“Unfortunately, that is something that we have had happen many times over the last few years and it’s heartbreaking to work so hard, and then have to do it all over again…” they said on their Facebook page.

It is an unending cycle in their line of work, but now the Blackwell Animal Control has been given the opportunity to try and make a change in that aspect. Because of this change though, the adoption fees have raised at the Blackwell Animal Shelter. Previously, you could adopt an animal for $20. Now, the adoption fees have been raised to $80 for dogs and $50 for cats. With the added vet care, the prices needed to reflect that. Regardless, this is still an amazing change for the Blackwell Animal Control.

There will be some exceptions to the rule of every animal being sterilized depending on health and age of the animal, but the adoption price remains the same. This is because, once that animal is in good health or the right age, the owners can still have the procedure payed for at the Blackwell Animal Hospital.

Some community members have even rallied behind the Blackwell ACOs and have offered to sponsor the animals in need of new homes.

“…we do have some amazing people that have offered to help with some of the adoption fees if that is something that is needed to get these wonderful animals into amazing new homes.”

If anyone else within the community is wanting or able, whether businesses or just community members, you can sponsor your own animal at the Blackwell Animal Shelter. This can be an anonymous donation, or the Blackwell ACOs can post that you sponsored one of their animals.

If any businesses would like to host the Blackwell Animal Control Officers and their furry friends, they would be more than happy to be there to try and find homes for the animals in their care. On Fri., April 28, they spent the afternoon at Blackwell Public Library where the public was able to meet a few of their available animals.

This is a great change to see at Blackwell Animal Shelter and hopefully in the wake of it, there will be less dogs without homes in the Blackwell area.
