The North Central Oklahoma Beekeepers will hold their August meeting Tuesday, August 11. Meetings are held at the Pioneer Tech Center and begin at 6:15.

Summer is winding down for beekeepers. Now is the time of year most beekeepers think about harvesting honey. Beekeepers must be careful not to harvest to much of the honey supply. Bees will need honey to survive through the winter when it is too cold to get out and look for nectar and also when nectar is very difficult to find. So remember, leave a super for the girls!

The beginning of fall, after harvest, is the time to do a mite count. Mites can devastate even the hardiest hive during the winter. Now is the time to make your plan both on how you are going to test for mites and how you are going to treat for mites if the count is above the threshold number,

Any bee hive with a mite infestation of 5% or more should be treated immediately. A 3% level of infestation bears watching but could be left for the present.

Join our local beekeepers Tuesday to learn more about the wonderful honey bee!
