The first episode of Marvel’s What If…? animated anthology series debuted on Wednesday Aug. 11. The series is the first animated entry within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and showcases a number of alternate realities based on the idea of how things may have played out if certain events were altered.

Mild spoilers for Loki ahead.

What If…? appears to follow the events that played out in the earlier Loki Disney+ series with the Sacred Timeline splintering to several branches. The series sees the alien Uatu the Watcher, as the narrator for the various variant timelines we see play out within the series, with which he may only observe, and never interfere.

This first episode’s title asks the question: “What If… Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?” and much like the comics of the same name, we see a retelling of a famous event (in this case Captain America: The First Avenger), but with a butterfly effect styled twist that significantly alters the course of events.

In this episode, Peggy Carter becomes the Allies’ sole super soldier in the place of Steve Rogers against the Nazis and Hydra.

On the whole, I’d say the episode did raise some interesting ideas, and I did enjoy the animation more than I thought I might (I usually prefer a more traditional “2D” to the cel-shaded look “2.5D” style), I am definitely excited for the next chapter in this series, as the “What If…?” comics have always been fun. A real complaint I have is the weird pacing (understandable since they are condensing a two and a half hour movie into thirty minutes), and awkward voice acting. While they did manage to get several actors to return to their roles, unfortunately, acting and voice acting are two separate arts. And because of this distinction, some performances came off flat.

Looks like we can expect at least a Marvel zombies scenario and T’Challa becoming Star-Lord as future storylines, and due to events established in Loki, all these scenarios are technically canon, reflective of variant timelines.

What If…? has a lot of potential, the original comics series itself asks many questions that ultimate ended up become full fledged ideas and characters themselves, such as Professor Hulk (Hulk with Banner’s mind) and Jane Foster as Thor. No doubt, Marvel is hoping Captain Carter catches on and they can integrate her into the MCU proper.

On the whole, What If…? can provide writers with a myriad of fun and fascinating storytelling ideas, just as the comics of the same name did, I hope that continuing into this series we see some truly interesting and fun scenarios (fingers crossed for “What If Captain America became the President?” and “What If Civil War ended differently?”).

It is clear with What If..? and the fallout from Loki that the multiverse is going to be the next big thing for the MCU.
