The rights to Marvel Comics superhero Daredevil will revert to Marvel Studios to be able to use since the Netflix series of the same name was cancelled back in November of 2018. The original agreement apparently was the character would not appear in any non-Netflix series or films during the two year period after cancellation.

The Netflix series, without a doubt the best of the streaming platforms Marvel properties, is set in the MCU with season one taking place after the events of 2012’s The Avengers. However the relationship between Marvel movies and Marvel tv is… complicated.

All these interconnected movies were quite a massive undertaking and the decision to branch into tv as well proved equally ambitious, but it became abundantly clear that the interconnectedness may prove more one sided. Aside from season one of Agents of SHIELD, the movies have referenced the various series in only one way, with James D’Arcy reprising his role as Edwin Jarvis from Agent Carter in Avengers: Endgame.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has expressed interest in salvaging some of the characters from the Netflix show. The big question is whether we’ll see the same actors returning or if we’re in for some kind of soft reboot via a recast or will the Netflix shows be retroactively made non-canon.

There are a few upcoming Marvel projects that could make one, some or all the above true to a degree. We previously covered WandaVision and the potential for bizarre reality warping events that may go on there. A new Doctor Strange sequel is in production called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will undoubtedly open up a whole new sandbox for the MCU to play with.

We could even potentially see something in the new currently untitled Spider-Man threequel, with the castings of both Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in the film as well as Jamie Foxx as Electro, a role he previously played in the canned Amazing Spider-Man series. The question of multiverse possibilities seems very likely.

Even if the multiversal soft reboot approach proves to be nothing more than wild mass guessing, the third MCU Spider-Man film or the reported fourth film that is also in development could factor Daredevil into the equation as the two heroes often team-up in the comics and both share a nemesis in The Kingpin.

Whatever the future holds for Daredevil, his inclusion is a welcome one to the film series and Marvel’s ever expanding library of characters.
