Almost 90,000 children in Oklahoma are being cared for by their grandparents. Taking on the responsibility of caring for a young child when you should be enjoying your retirement can be overwhelming and exhausting. It is important that you develop techniques to help you take care of your own needs, so that you will be better equipped to meet the needs of your grandchild. Here are a few suggestions to help you engage in a little self-care:

· Join a support group. It is an excellent way to gain support, get information, and share ideas.

· Don’t neglect your own health. Schedule a check-up, exercise regularly and make sure you get enough rest. Your health is important to both you, and your grandchild!

· Take time for yourself. A regular quiet hour, lunch with friends or a hot bath before bed can help restore your energy and give you the boost you need to keep up with your busy schedule.

· Learn to say no.

· Keep a sense of humor. Laughter is good for your health!

· Set limits with your grandchildren and stick with them. They need the security that firm boundaries provide.

We have a grandparent raising children support group that meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. at the LTCA of Enid Area Agency on Aging Office at 202 W. Broadway, Enid, Oklahoma. Please contact Twila Doucet, Caregiver Coordinator for more information at 580-234-7475.
