There are many talent contests on network television, from American Idol and America’s Got Talent (AGT), to similar programs in Europe like The X Factor. Many tune in to watch people chase their dreams, while many others find their dreams realized on the shows.

For youth in Kay County hoping to find their own success, the Kay County Amphitheater is offering that opportunity with the second annual Kay County’s Youth Got Talent (KCYGT), where they can showcase their abilities in front of their families and peers.

The show will coincide with a Back to School Bash to celebrate the start of the school year. The fun begins at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19.

Kelle Cross is co-chair of the KCYGT.

“This is an event to encourage the youth of the area to showcase their talents,” she said. “We know there is some terrific talent in Kay County, and we would like to see it.”

There are elements of talent shows intertwined with the program, specifically American Idol and AGT.

To audition, kids aged 8 - 19 are asked to make a 60-second video displaying their talent. Like AGT, it can be anything they believe they have a talent in.

“It can be anything from plate-spinning to music, dancing,” she said. “They need to record themselves on YouTube, and send the link to us.”

Hopeful participants can scan the QR code on promotionalfliersdistributed acrossthecommunity, ontheir Facebook page or emailed to KayCountyAmphitheater@gmail.com. The deadline to enter auditions is July 20.

Like American Idol, the auditions will be reviewed by the committee, and those selected will have a chance to perform at the Aug. 19 show. All kids will be notified concerning their act.

“If selected, we will ask the youth to perform at the Amphitheater,” Cross said.

The event begins at 7:30, and will be emceed by Newkirk High School graduate and Poncan Theater actor Mason Smykil, who will provide entertainment between acts. A panel of judges will select the top winners, who will be invited to perform at the Amphitheater during Charlie Adams Day Sept. 9, an annual festival celebrating Newkirk’s history and culture. The winners will also receive cash prizes.

The audience will also vote for a People’s Choice Award.

There will be plenty of other activities as well, including Chick-fil-A food truck and a “touch a truck” event planned, along with many other games with the Back to School Bash celebrating the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

No matter the age, Kay County and surrounding communities are invited to a fun night recognizing youth talent.

“Please invite your friends for a group performance, or you can perform individually,” Cross said. “We’re excited about the second KCYGT, and Back to School Bash,” she said.
