Dear Annie

Body
Dear Annie: My husband and I have a 34-year-old daughter who has lived with us all her life (except for maybe a year). She brought her freeloading boyfriend in. I had cancer at the time and they didn’t even bother to do anything, so she ended up pregnant.

It’s the Economy, Joe, and Only the Economy

Body
Joe Biden’s supporters and perhaps Biden himself -- can’t understand why the presidential poll numbers on the economy aren’t better. Why is he getting so little credit for so much good news on inflation, wages, jobs and the recovery of American manufacturing? Donald Trump’s idea of a strong economy centered on the stock market, about which he tweeted obsessively. Biden’s focus is on Americans who aren’t already rich. And, by the way, stocks are also doing real well.

Dear Annie: Most often a cheating husband or wife causes the divorce. Most would want to end their marriage after finding their partner cheated. And most people would advise the offended partner to leave.

Jack Smith narrows possible charges against Trump to the essentials. That’s a good thing

Body
We don’t know what specific charges special counsel Jack Smith will pursue if former President Donald Trump is indicted on allegations of attempting to overturn the 2020 election. We can’t even be certain that there will be an indictment, although it looks imminent after Smith sent Trump a target letter last week.

Dear Annie

Dear Annie: So I’m pretty sure I know what the right answer is and you’ll be shaking your head at my letter; however, I feel like I’m on this adrenaline rush. I am married and have been together with my wife for 13 years.

The Brawler: Chris Christie’s Not Mincing Words

Body
Last week’s release of the second quarter’s fundraising figures for the 2024 presidential candidates produced two notable news stories. One was that President Joe Biden and his associated fundraising arms raised $72 million between his late-April reelection launch and June 30. This financial haul, double what former President Donald Trump raised in the second quarter, poured 72 buckets of cold water on the “Dementia-Joe-isn’t-supported- by-Democrats” narrative that had gained currency, pushed and peddled by Republicans.

The Press’s War Against Free Speech

Body
Have we gotten to the point that it’s politically necessary to defend the principle of free speech? Apparently so. Consider the reaction of journalists -- people who, more than anyone else in our society, have a professional and economic interest in free speech -- to Louisiana- based District Judge Terry Doughty’s July 4 decision on a motion to bar agencies of the federal government from pressuring social media outlets to suppress information the agencies deem “misinformation.” The injunction barring federal agencies from communicating with these firms was blocked from going into effect by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on July 14.
