Woodland, Tonkawa still in hunt for district title

After action Friday night, the Woodland Cougars and Hominy Bucks are still unbeaten in the very tough District A5 race. But there are some big games remaining which will help determine the final district standings.

Hominy defeated Tonkawa 27-21 in the showdown of unbeaten and highly ranked teams. Woodland improved its district record to 5-0 with a 28-8 win over Morrison. Woodland has games remaining with Hominy this week and Tonkawa in the final week of the season. Tonkawa has a game against Chelsea, which is the likely No. 4 finisher, this week. Hominy has Woodland this week and finishes the season with Chouteau- Mazie. In the Tonkawa-Hominy contest, Tonkawa scored first and led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Hominy picked up 15 points in the second quarter to Tonkawa’s seven and led the Buccaneers 15-14 at the half. Hominy added 12 points in the third quarter and Tonkawa had seven in the fourth. Hominy was able to close out the game with a 27-21 winning total.

Against Morrison, Woodland scored first and led at the end of the first quarter 6-0. The Cougars added eight points in the second quarter to take the score to 14-0 at the end of the half. Morrison scored in the third quarter to narrow the Woodland margin to 14-8. But the Cougars added 14 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Aidan Rhodes scored the first Woodland touchdown on a 20-yard run. Nathan Bouchard scored the second TD for the Cougars on a 3-yard carry. Trey Bennett caught a 15-yard pass from Aidan Rhodes for the third Cougar touchdown and Rhodes ran for 5 yards for the final score. Woodland had 264 yards total offense to Morrison’s 153. Woodland had a total of 181 yards rushing and 83 passing compared to Morrison’s 67 yards rushing and 67 passing.

Newkirk stayed alive in the District 2A-1 playoff position hunt with a 40-19 win over Perry on Thursday. The Tigers need a win to secure playoff position and they have games with Blackwell and Hennessey remaining.
