Newkirk, Tonkawa get significant wins
The Newkirk Tigers and Tonkawa Buccaneers won important games Friday, while the Woodland Cougars lost a big game.
Newkirk defeated Kay County rival Blackwell 56-7, and Tonkawa topped Chelsea 48-14. In a big District A-5 game between unbeatens Hominy defeated Woodland 33-20.
By winning Friday, Newkirk set up a battle for third place in District 2A-1 against Hennessey. Both teams have 4-2 district records. Hennessey lost to Millwood Friday.
Tonkawa stayed in the hunt for a second place finish in District A-5. They play Woodland Friday and both teams have a 5-1 district mark. The Bucs will be the home team in Friday’s game.
The Woodland-Hominy game was a real battle, with Hominy pulling away late to win by 13 points. Hominy secured a first-place district finish with the win.
Other games involving area teams included Pawnee defeating Oklahoma Union 68-44, Chouteau 24, Morrison 21 and Waynoka 54, Deer Creek-Lamont 8.
