The family of Dr. Patricia Ann Sargent is thrilled to announce her 90th birthday on February 12th. Under the reign of Pope Pius XI and presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, she was born on February 12, 1933 to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Patrick Turner of Arkansas City, Kansas. Over the years, she lost her parents, husband - Dr Earl Sargent, and one brother and sister-in-law – Mr. and Mrs. William (Ivy) Turner of St. Helens, Merseyside, England (Po-Hi, ’47). Dr. Sargent has one brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Turner (Po-Hi, ’60) of Maryville, Illinois. On August 21st, 1966, she was married to Earl Sargent in Greeley, Colorado. Her daughter Gail is an attorney with The Sargent Law Group, while her son Stephan is a professor at Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Dr. Sargent has one beloved Scottish Terrier, Fala McTavish Sargent. She is an active member of Holy Family Catholic Cathedral and regularly attends Most Precious Blood Parish in Tulsa. She remains active in church work, travel, family, and education.

As an infant, Dr. Sargent’s family moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma. There, she attended Lincoln Elementary School, East Junior High School, and the Ponca City Senior High School. During her senior year of high school Dr. Sargent was the president of the Future Teachers of America Club. Following graduation in 1951, Dr. Sargent attended and graduated from Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa. In 1955, she received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas with an emphasis in library science and biology.

Dr. Sargent taught for two years in Denver, Colorado, serving as a librarian at an elementary school. Next, she taught seventh and eighth grade science at Forest Heights Junior High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Following two years there, Dr. Sargent attended the University of Virginia at Charlottesville and obtained a master’s degree in science education (1960). After graduation, she taught for Miss Edna Thomas at Roosevelt Elementary School (1960-1961) and for Mr. Alan Robson at West Junior High School (1961-1962) in Ponca City, Oklahoma. She then returned to Virginia, teaching at Albemarle County High School in Charlottesville, Virginia from 19621965. While there, she pursued further postgraduate work at the University of Virginia.

In 1965, Dr. Sargent began a doctoral program at The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, majoring in College Student Personnel Administration. She received her PhD on August 12, 1972. While the children were young, Dr. Sargent stayed home as a full-time mother. Later she taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Tulsa. Subsequently, she taught science at North Intermediate High School and at Childers Middle School in Broken Arrow. Dr. Sargent was appointed to the Oklahoma Textbook Commission by Gov. Henry Bellmon in the 1980’s. In 1986, she received the Science Teacher Award for Excellence in Science Education. In 1990 Dr. Sargent was named the Broken Arrow Teacher of the Year and a state semi-finalist for State Teacher of the Year. In 1999, Dr. Sargent retired from the Broken Arrow School System, following decades of distinguished service to the district. In March, 2011, Dr. Sargent was selected as a Distinguished Alumna of Northern Oklahoma College (Tonkawa, Oklahoma) and inducted into the NOC Alumni Hall of Fame.

Dr. Sargent has been an active member of The Oklahoma Science Teachers’ Association, The National Science Teachers’ Association, The Oklahoma Education Association, Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Alpha Delta Kappa. She is also an active member of The Holy Family Cathedral Women’s Club. Dr. Sargent enjoys spending time and holidays at the family’s summer home in Kansas.

A party to honor her 90th birthday will be held at Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa (820 S. Boulder Ave.) in the Heiring Auditorium on Saturday, March 4th, 2023 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. All friends, family, and former students are invited. Dr. Sargent requests no gifts except the honor of your presence at this festive event.
