BROKEN ARROW -- The Ponca City Wildcats’ baseball season came to an end Friday, when they experienced a pair of losses in the Class 6A Regional Tournament.

The Wildcats first lost to Bixby 2-0 and then in a losers’ bracket game dropped a 12-2 decision to the host Broken Arrow Tigers.

Ponca City had been scheduled to play Bixby on Thursday, but then the action was put off until Friday due to rain.

Bixby scored the only run it would need in the first inning and then added one for insurance in the third. Bixby outhit the Wildcats 3-1.

Brody Wicker had the only Ponca City hit, a double in the sixth inning. Ponca City batters struck out nine times.

Aidan Howard was the Wildcat pitcher. He worked six innings and struck out six.

Ponca City had its chances starting with two base runners in the first inning, both reaching on walks. The Wildcats again got two runners on base in the second on a walk and a hit batter, and had a runner reach third on a passed ball. Another runner reached base in the fourth due to a walk. Wicker’s double came after Colton Jones walked in the sixth but a strikeout and a ground ball out ended the threat. And a walk with no outs in the seventh ended with the next three batters going down on strikes.

Broken Arrow had been favored to win the tournament, but lost in the opening round 13-12 to Muskogee. The Tigers came out with intensity in the losers’ bracket game with Ponca CIty, scoring one run in the first, two in the second and then putting things away with seven in the fourth. Ponca City scored its two runs in the third and Broken Arrow added two in the bottom of the sixth.

The Tigers pounded out 16 hits against three Wildcat pitchers. Hayden LeClair got the start with Isaiah Branstetter relieving in the third and Colton Jones coming in to pitch in the fourth. LeClair gave up six hits and three runs, Branstetter allowed five hits and six runs and Jones permitted five hits and three runs.

Grant Harmon, Jones, Wicker, Branstetter and Howard each got a hit for Ponca City. Harmon, who was playing his last game as a Wildcat, had a double.

Among Broken Arrow’s 16 hits were a home run, a triple and five doubles.

Ponca City’s season ended with the team compiling a 9-28 record.
