Margaret Anne Marcellus Sullivan passed away Sunday, June 6, 2021, at the age of 90. Marge was one of seven sisters, Nadyne, Betty, Helen, Bonnie, Mary, Janis, and, one brother, Charles. She was born to Glen Marcellus and Helen Clarkson Marcellus on May 8, 1931 on a farm northwest of Liberal in Stevens County, Kansas. She rode a horse, “Nelly,” to grade school, and, graduated from Liberal High School in 1949. Raised during the dust bowl years, this encouraged her to be a thrifty, helpful soul throughout her life. After high school, she moved to attend school in Kansas City, Missouri, while working as a secretary.

Marge married her high school sweetheart, Douglas S. Sullivan on January 29, 1954. They moved to Norman, Oklahoma, where Doug studied at the University of Oklahoma, and Marge worked for Kerr McGee. They remained life-long OU fans.

Marge and Doug had four children, Terry Anne born in Norman; their three other children were born in Ponca City: John Patrick, Deborah Suzanne, and Michael Douglas. Always a teacher, she led the “Beautiful Blue Birds (Camp Fire),” kept score for the Junior Golf program, taught catechism for multiple grades at St. Mary’s, and, volunteered in her children’s classrooms. She and Pat made frequent trips to the Allergy Clinic in Oklahoma City, following with side trips to an amusement park or the zoo. She then administered the many allergy shots Pat needed during his early years. Later, she made weekly trips with Michael to M. D. Anderson in Houston for three years, while he was undergoing treatment. Marge was an accomplished seamstress, making all of Deborah’s and Terry’s school clothes, as well as those for special occasions, such as Easter outfits, including the purses and matching hats. She was a devoted mother and completely selfless.

Marge was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ponca City, a long-time member of St. Francis Guild, and volunteered there in various capacities for many years. She participated in three mission trips to Guatemala with the Catholic Church. She had a special fondness for the “Golden Oldies” in later years, who met for coffee and socializing.

While Marge and Doug were on a trip to Europe, she got to meet her lifelong pen pal, Sheila Harrod. They originally became pen-pals during World War 2 through the “Care Packages” program. She also attended the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair with her mother and sister. On her 80th birthday, she attended the Kentucky Derby. Her love of horses began with school days and riding Nelly. She also enjoyed adventures to India, Philippines, Mexico and Canada.

She lived for the last thirty years overlooking Kaw Lake. She spent a lot of time cultivating roses from the Pioneer Woman Statue and irises from long-time friend and St. Mary’s pastor, Rev. Ernest A. Flusche. She often expressed how much fun it was to watch the many birds, deer, turkeys, rabbits and racoons that frequented her yard.

Marge had a big celebration of her 90th birthday with her family and friends. After a brief illness, she passed away. Marge is survived by her son Pat (Jan), daughter Terry (Steve), granddaughters Krysten Rae (Jason), Kathryn Rene (Ryan), Kimberly Ryan (Justin), Eleanor Katherine, and, grandson Sean P., great-grandsons Jet P. and Thomas M., great granddaughters Kolbie Rae and Kensington Rose, her brother Charles, and, numerous nieces and nephews. Marge was a very giving person by nature, and, took care of those who struggled along the path.
