THIS WEEKEND AT THE PONCA CITY GOSPEL JUBILEE The Ponca City Gospel Jubilee will feature the “Amundson Family Bluegrass” April 1st at 6:30 p.m.

Coming to us from Checotah Oklahoma This family ministry will add family flavored bluegrass and old-time country music , uplifting and fun entertainment. It is certain to comfort the soul, put a smile on the face, and cause a positive distraction from all of the negative talk we seem to be bombarded with.

When you put banjo, mandolin, guitar, bass, and a fiddle into the mix with family harmonies and sibling antics, many may say that you get bluegrass with a twist. We simply call it Amundson Family Music. Since they were young, they’ve all been steeped in gospel and acoustic music that straight and stays true to who they are, and how they were raised. The simple appeal of this has allowed them to travel and perform far and wide, record albums, and entertain audiences in Canada and the USA. From the 1990s to 2000, Darryl played 5-string banjo for the Saskatchewan- famous bluegrass band “Baler Strings” performing and recording all over Western Canada at towns, villages, and bluegrass festivals. Now that the kids are old enough to help form a band, he now MCs the band, plays guitar, and sings. With the way the kids are coming along, he figures he’ll be soon delegated to just driving the bus. As Stringbean once said, “I feel so unnecessary!” Come join us for a wonderful night that will be enjoyed by all ages. Refreshments, drawings and closing with the Gospel Jubilee Band bringing southern gospel music. This group is comprised of talented musicians, singers, songwriters and recording artist. We hope you’ll bring the family and invite a friend and come on out!!!! For reservations of 6 or more contact Vickie Vaughan at (580)628-7105

Pioneer Genealogical Society will meet Monday, April 3 at 7 pm at the Ponca City Library. The public is welcome. This month’s program topic will be “The Mystery of Michael Grant --- A Family History Lost and Found.”

Who is Marshall K Grant, the presenter? He is a native Ponca Citian who has extensively researched his family history, a Civil War buff, and has also written about the history of the Ponca tribe as well as the Cherokee Outlet Land Run.

After graduating from PoHi in 1967, attending Tulsa University, and graduating from OSU (with a BA in Cultural Studies), he moved to Delaware Gap, PA and began touring as tenor soloist with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians (his first career). Returning to Ponca City, he worked for the Presbyterian Church and was on the original staff of Kay County Youth Services.

He then began a 40-year career as a real estate banker in Ponca City, Stillwater and Tulsa. In 1993 when the Bank of Oklahoma expanded to Dallas, he moved there. In 2006 he was working as a consultant in financial services and asset management until he retired in 2013. He moved back to Ponca in 2020.
