Everyday Cheapskate

Body
Confused in the Supermarket Dear Mary: Can you clarify expiration dates on food products? When it says “sell by 4/01/21,” does that mean it has to be used or just sold by that date? Others show a date of, say, “2/01/23” on canned or packaged goods. Does that mean you need to use it by this date, or what? Some canned or packaged products don’t seem to have any date that I can find.

Xi Gamma Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi meeting

Body
Xi Gamma Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met in the home of Betty Jones on September 22, 2020 at 12:30. Guest speaker Scott Jones from the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief group at First Baptist Church of Ponca City, which is part of the Baptist General Convention, spoke to the chapter members about the group’s disaster relief activities and mission. There are approximately 50 members of FBC who respond to disasters, as well as volunteers from other area churches. The volunteers are trained in all aspects of disaster relief, and have a trailer equipped with tools and supplies that they take to the site. They go to the site when they are called, and contact property owners for permission to help with whatever their needs are. Their mission is to minister to victims by giving care and concern, as well as the physical work involved in cleaning up and restoring communities. There are Baptist Disaster Relief groups throughout the nation who respond to disaster areas. Jones stated that they were preparing to leave on Sunday for five days in Lake Charles, LA. to assist with clean up from the recent hurricane. The volunteers will headquarter at a church, and sleep on floors or whatever is available. Some in the group will be organized into feeding, laundry, showers and chainsaw crews. Jones answered questions to conclude his talk.

Our Most Personal Vote

Body
In the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004, the Democratic nominees, former Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John Kerry, were both seen by the nation’s voters as more knowledgeable and more intelligent than the Republican standard-bearer in both elections, George W. Bush. But those same voters in both campaigns found Bush to be more honest, trustworthy and likable than either Gore or Kerry. In explaining why Bush defeated Kerry, respected Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart put it bluntly: “Voters value ‘I Like’ over IQ.”

Dear Annie

Body
Dear Annie: Recently, an old friend got back in touch with me. He had gotten a divorce, and I wanted to be a friend to him because he was going through a lot of grieving. His ex-wife had alcohol issues and was abusing her bipolar medication. She also, prior to their marriage falling apart, got gastric bypass surgery and, after the procedure, began having extramarital affairs. He caught them and found out who one of them was one day.
