New law created to prevent future debt deductions OKLAHOMA CITY — Almost $2 million from a tax credit program intended to help families afford private school instead went to parents’ debts and delinquent taxes. The Oklahoma Tax Commission has deducted 1,249 parental choice tax credit payments from applicants who had unpaid taxes or a debt claim filed against them, the agency reported in response to an open records request from Oklahoma Voice.
Lawmakers send Oklahoma governor bills allocating $45 million in disaster relief

OKLAHOMA CITY — Lawmakers sent two measures to the governor that would provide $45 million in disaster relief for counties impacted by the recent tornadoes. House Bill 2912 creates a new fund for the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management to offer loans to local governments that have been approved for FEMA disaster aid.
Third session in Alzheimer’s Education Series to be held May 21

The third session in the six month Alzheimer’s Education Series is set to be held on Tuesday, May 21 from 12 pm to 1 pm at the Carolyn Renfro Event Center located at 445 Fairview in Ponca City. The series has thus far covered the early stages of dementia, and risk factors.
Mental Health Awareness at War Memorial Park

A special event aimed at bringing awareness to the issue of mental health was held at War Memorial Park on Thursday, May 16 from 4 pm to 6 pm. This event saw United Way of North Central Oklahoma and Community Health Foundation of Kay County partnering with several other local organizations to provide resources for community members with access to organizations in the community who can assist with mental health issues.

I visited Barnsdall on Friday, and the damage to the town was the most devastating thing I’ve ever seen. It was simply heartbreaking to see that essentially half of the town had disappeared, leaving many homeowners with next to nothing. However, I was glad to see representatives from various state agencies on the ground helping local residents. State health officials were administering tetanus shots. Officials from the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management were there in addition to Highway Patrol troopers and other first responders. FEMA representatives also arrived in town the same day.
