In the first district matches for the Ponca City varsity soccer teams Tuesday against Muskogee, the Wildcat boys team was victorious, while the Po-Hi girls lost.

Muskogee topped the Ponca City girls 1-0. After a scoreless first half, the Rougher girls were able to score a goal in the second half to secure the victory.

Girls Coach Mike Arnold called the results “an upsetting loss.”

Ponca City’s boys put together a 3-0 victory in a match that was described by Coach Ben Steichen as “fast paced.”

“Hats off to a Muskogee team that pressured and fought all the way to the end,” Steichen said. “They have a much improved and solid squad.”

Cayden Andersen started the scoring for Ponca City with a penalty kick in the first half, which was followed by Gabe Roland scoring on what Steichen called a “missile of a shot to the near post” off of a through ball by Eliseo Ramirez. The first half ended with Ponca City ahead 2-0.

In the second half, Ponca City’s Malachi Johnson scored on a beautifully placed shot off of an assist by his brother, Elijah Kriesel.

“The defense then did its part to shut down Muskogee’s offense,” Steichen said. “Our seniors really led the way on the score sheet and in leadership.”

The Wildcats are now 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in district play. The two varsity teams will travel to Bartlesville Friday for two more district matches.
