EDMOND -- Mattie Shearer, a Ponca City sophomore, won first place in the 100-meter breaststroke in the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association State Swimming Meet Friday.

Shearer is the first Ponca City girl swimmer to win a state championship since 1988. She also won a state championship last summer, swimming for her club.

Overall, Coach Heather Harris’ team had a good showing at the state. The boys team finished in seventh place and the girls were eighth.

Shearer also finished third in the 50 Freestyle.

Among the other swimmers, Kyle King was third in the 100 Freestyle and sixth in the 200 Freestyle; Timothy Crank was fourth in the 50 Freestyle and seventh in the 100 Butterfly; Jessalyn Carpenter was fifth in the 100 Freestyle and eighth in the 200 Freestyle; and Braden Stewart was seventh in both the 100 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke.

The boys 400 Freestyle relay team of Stewart, Riley Ladner, Crank and King finished fifth; the girls 200 Freestyle Relay team of Carpenter, Alyssa Sullivan, Alyssa Cannon and Shearer, finished seventh and the girls 200 Medley Relay team of Pracilla Ard, Shearer, Sullivan and Carpenter finished 13th.

“I am extremely proud of how my team swam all season,” Harris said. “We had an incredible conference, regional and state meet. They all work incredibly hard and I couldn’t be more proud of the top places at state from multiple individuals. We also brought home an individual title which hadn’t been done since 1988 for women’s swimming. It has been a fun ride and I can’t wait to see what they do next year.”

Edmond North won the boys state championship defeating second-place Jenks by one point. Jenks won the girls state title over Bartlesville by .5 of a point, in very close team competition.
