In not so exciting fashion, the Cowgirls were winners again.

No. 2 OSU defeated North Texas, 2-0, on Wednesday, improving its record to 26-2 and pushing its winning streak to eight.

In a game where three pitchers would see the circle, OSU senior Lexi Kilfoyl got the start and pitched four innings, earning the win after striking out four batters and allowing three hits and one walk on 53 pitches.

“(She) pounded the strike zone, you know the drop (pitch) is hard on them,” OSU coach Kenny Gajewski said. “You could see it was kind of blowing their bats backwards and when that’s happening it tells me that her spin is good, and it’s got a good, hard break.”

A key moment in Kilfoyl’s start came in the top of the fourth inning when the Mean Green had runners at the corners. With two outs, she fired a pitch and forced a pop up to get out of the inning, preventing UNT from tying it up at one.

“It’s like a big deep breath (to get out of that), like thank goodness, we’re over with it,” Kilfoyl said. “Get to go back out there with nobody on base and just try and start from the beginning.”

For the offense, the Cowgirls totaled six hits behind two-hit nights from Kiley Naomi, who ripped an RBI double that scored the first run of the night, and Taylor Tuck.

Tuck, a fifth-year catcher, got OSU on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth before hitting a double in the sixth. She acknowledged that a successful night at the plate and extra work has led to a boost in confidence.

“I’ve been working extra throughout the week because I haven’t been swinging as well as I want to,” Tuck said. “So just staying true to that and getting all the reps outside of practice has really helped me to gain my confidence in the box again.”

Moving past the win on Wednesday, the Cowgirls will quickly turn around and begin conference play on Friday starting with a home series versus Baylor.

“Just can’t wait. I mean, It’s conference, it’s fun,” Gajewksi said. “It just has another level of intensity, and you know, when you play somebody three times in a row, it’s brutal. Bad stuff.”
