Ponca City teams win consolation titles

For the second time this season, both Ponca City varsity basketball teams won the consolation championship in tournaments in which they were involved.

Saturday the Ponca City Lady Cats defeated Trinity Christian of Texas, 60-38 to capture the consolation title in the Union-Jenks Invitational at Tulsa Union High School. Also Saturday, the Wildcats got past Ada 56-51 for the consolation championship of the Titan Classic at Carl Albert High School in Midwest City.

LADY CATS

Saturday’s victory over Trinity Christian came after Friday’s 41-18 win over the HFC Warriors. The Lady Cats lost their opener in the tournament to Mustang on Thursday.

In Friday’s game, the Lady Cats held the Warriors scoreless in the first period and led 18-0. Their lead was 31-3 at the half and 37-9 after three quarters. Emma Gertken was the leading scorer with 12 points. Carlie Badley also scored in double figures finishing with 11.

Saturday, the Lady Cats led 13-8 after one quarter and then began to pull away in the second quarter to lead 27-13 at the half. They expanded their lead to 41-22 after three quarters.

Four players scored in double figures. Ashlynn Fincher led with 18 points. Emma Gertken scored 16 points, Sarah Dingus had 12 and Carlie Badley had 11.

Badley had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Kyra Allison had 11 rebounds.

The Lady Cats did well at the free throw line, getting 27 points from that perspective. Fincher hit 11 of 14 attempts, Badley hit 7 of 11 attempts and Gertken connected on six of eight throws.

Earlier this season, the Lady Cats won the consolation championship in the East Central Oklahoma Tournament in Ada. They are now 6-4 on the season.

WILDCATS

The Wildcats defeated Ada, the No. 7 team in Class 4A, Saturday after beating McAlester 73-51 on Friday.

In Friday’s game, the Wildcats had a pretty consistent outing scoring 17 points in the first quarter, 19 in the second period, 20 in the third and 18 in the fourth.

Grant Dye led the Ponca City scoring with 23 points. Others in double digits were Marshaun Webb with 13 points, Steven Faulkner with 10 and Anthony Gazaway with 10.

Steven Faulkner had a hot hand Saturday against Ada. The senior pumped in eight three-point baskets and finished with 26 points. The Wildcats scored only six points in the first quarter, but then exploded for 29 in the second. Faulkner hit six of his eight treys in the second period. Ponca City scored seven points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth. Grant Dye was also in double figures, finishing with 12 points.

“I’m so proud of this team and the way they come together to pull out a great win,” Coach Ivan McFarlin said about his Wildcat team. “Our older group players, Collin Crandall, Anthony Gazaway, Steven Faulkner, Grant Dye, Culley Porter, Marshaun Webb, Issac Valencia, Brooks Revard, Nate Patel and Tyson Dewberry are working very hard this year to make this team something special. The young guys got a little bit of action and I think its good for them to get some experience this weekend. Great performance from the whole team.”

The Wildcats are now 5-5 on the season. They also won the consolation championship in a tournament in Ada earlier this year.
