Jun. 8—Oklahoma State’s coaching staff shakeup is complete.

Cowboys coach Mike Boynton will have nearly an entirely new coaching staff.

Veteran David Cason and Orangeville (Canada) Prep founder Larry Blunt were hired Monday to fill out the coaching staff.

That shifts Scott Sutton to director of basketball administration. Barry Hinson is also back as staff analyst, a position that was eliminated last year during the COVID-19 pandemic budget cuts. He remained in that role on a voluntary basis last season.

Earlier this offseason, OSU hired Creighton assistant Terrence Rencher to replace Cannen Cunningham.

Last month, assistant Erik Pastrana was hired by Florida, opening another position.

Instead, Boynton turned to two new coaches.

Cason is a 25-year collegiate coaching veteran. He spent the past three seasons at Florida International and has coached at Texas, North Carolina, Notre Dame, VCU and Tulsa. He was a big part of Shaka Smart’s staff at Texas from 2015-17 and also coached with Smart at VCU.

Cason coached at Tulsa from 2005-11.

“When it comes to versatility of experience, it doesn’t get much better than David Cason,” Boynton said in a release. “Coach Cason has coached at every level of college basketball. He has proven time and time again that he has the ability to connect, recruit, develop, and coach elite players for more than 20 years and has been a part of over 400 wins in his career.”

Blunt spent the past three seasons at Drake, which is coming off a season with 26 wins and an NCAA Tournament victory.

He was instrumental in the founding of Orangeville Prep in Ontario, Canada, the alma mater of current OSU forward Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe. Blunt also coached at Canisius and Oshawa Power of the National Basketball League of Canada.

Blunt also played college football at Elizabeth City University and James Madison.

“Coach Blunt is an outstanding addition to our staff,” Boynton said in the release. “His experience as an assistant at both Canisius and Drake, in addition to his experience running his own program, give me great confidence that he is ready to help us on our journey to build a champion in Stillwater.”
