Northern Oklahoma College men’s soccer clinched the conference championship with a 2-0 win over Rose State College on Wednesday while the women’s team lost 12-0.

The #13 Mavs’ men (9-1) will be the top seed at the Region 2 Tournament next week while the 18th ranked women’s team fell to 9-4.

Mavs’ men 2, Rose State 0

Damorney Hutchinson scored an early goal and then Jesus Aleman scored late on a free kick in a 2-0 win over the #14 Raiders.

The two-goal win clinched the conference championship for the Mavs with one game remaining. Rose State came into the game tied atop the conference standings with the Mavs needing only a win or a tie to clinch the championship due to their 2-1 overtime win over the Mavs early in the year. The Mavs needed to win by two or more goals to clinch the title on Wednesday. Northern would have won the championship with a one goal win as well, but would have had to wait until their result with Eastern Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Spencer Braswell picked up his seventh shutout of the year. Northern completed their five home games undefeated without allowing a goal. The Mavs outscored their opponents 16-0 at home this year.

“Congratulations to the boys,” said coach Michael DuRoy. “They have worked hard all year. It starts with the leadership from our captains and sophomores. They do not allow the team to slip. As everyone knows it’s been a difficult year full of challenges off the field with COVID-19 quarantine, and the season being moved to the spring.”

“Rose State is very good,” DuRoy added. “They press hard and can move the ball when they get it. They are physical and well coached. Beating them is difficult. We know the Region 2 Tournament will be difficult. Rich Mountain is playing really well and Murray State is capable of beating anyone. We are looking forward to the challenge”

Rose State 12, Mavs’ women 0

Rose State College blew out Northern on Wednesday 12-0. The Raiders scored six goals in the first half and six in the second half to take the easy win.

“First off congratulations to Rose State on their second-place finish in the conference,” said coach Michael DuRoy. “It seems like this spring Seminole is the clear first place team then there is a drop, then Rose State, and then a drop and everyone else is about the same. We are trying to build a program that is capable of challenging Seminole for the top spot. I’m confident that we are on our way. Today was a setback, but it will not deter us from moving forward in the fall at all. We are excited about the future.”

The Mavs are at Eastern for their final regular season game Saturday at 2 p.m. the men follow at 4 p.m.
