The Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks soccer teams swept Eastern in the home opener Wednesday in Tonkawa.

Both teams are 2-0 on the young season, the women’s team is 2-0 in conference play while the men are 1-0.

Mavs 4, Eastern 0

The Mavs routed Eastern Oklahoma State College 4-0 to move to 2-0 on the year. Northern started fast with a penalty kick goal by George Robinson. Damorney Hutchinson drew the foul in the box. The rest of the half was played primarily on the Mountaineer's half, but the Mavs couldn't score. Robinson did have a shot hit the crossbar, and Jesus Aleman had a shot hit the far post that deflected just wide of the goal. In all the Mavs took eleven shots in the first half with five on goal.

Northern started the second half strong with an early goal off a corner kick. Marcovich Brown sent a ball into the box and Aleman headed it home. Moments later Gio Herrera put the game out of reach with a goal after receiving a great pass from Robinson. Northern was still able to find the goal late when Eli Little played a ball in behind the Mountaineer defense to Hutchinson who beat the keeper for the final goal of the game.

"Overall I thought we played very well," said coach Michael DuRoy. "We still have a lot to work on, but we kept the ball much better, and our movement off the ball was really good. We need to improve our passing in the back, and we still need to work on our total team defending, but the guys are coming along nicely. I thought Gio Herrera was fantastic today. He was everywhere in the midfield. Brooks Rogers also played well. He does a lot of things that don't get noticed, but are very important for us to play the way we want to play. Marcovich Brown was much improved from the first game too. Our schedule gets much tougher from here on out, so we need to improve."

Lady Mavs 4, Eastern 0

The Mavericks topped Eastern Oklahoma State College 4-2 to move to 2-0, and sit atop the conference standings.

Northern wasted little time getting on the scoreboard just three minutes into the game as Milica Bulatovic broke in behind the Eastern defense and scored after receiving a pass from Marissa Neil. Moments later Janet Moreno would put the Mavs up 2-0 with a long shot that deflected off the Mountaineer goalkeeper before going in. Sofie Joergenson picked up the assist. Northern started the sec

Northern started the second half in much the same way with an early goal from Bulatovic. Moreno found Bulatovic in front of the goal and slipped a pass in to her. Bulatovic's initial shot was saved by the Eastern goalkeeper, but the rebound came back to her, and she blasted the ball into the corner of the goal. It looked like the Mavs were going to cruise to the easy victory, but Eastern scored to make the score 3-1. Northern turned the ball over in their defensive third, and a Mountaineer player chipped the ball over Northern goalkeeper, Jaime Rowlands, for the goal. The Mavs responded with a goal two minutes later to go up 4-1. Again it was Bulatovic scoring for the Mavs after receiving a pass from Joergensen. The game seemed to be out of reach, but Eastern scored on a free kick against a group of mostly reserve players for the Mavs to make the final score 4-2.

"All the credit to the girls for picking up the win, but we have to play better," said coach Micahel Duroy. "Eastern outplayed us in the midfield. We couldn't put any passes together. We have to find a way to keep the ball or we will be in trouble in the upcoming games. We have a limited roster this spring so we really can't make any personnel changes. We have to coach them better, and they are going to have to play better. Milica is doing her part up front, but we can't rely on her to create all of our chances. Our flank players have to get more involved. On the bright side I thought our centerbacks Rachael Chatterji and Nadia Chavez played well."

The Mavs next game is Friday in Tonkaws versus Rich Mountain College. Kick off is set for 2 p.m.
