TULSA -- The Ponca City Lady Cats' basketball season came to an end Thursday night as they dropped a 51-34 Class 6A Regional Tournament game to the Sand Springs Sandites.

The Lady Cats held their own in the first quarter, which ended in an 11-11 deadlock. But the second quarter proved fatal to the Ponca City team as it was able to score only one point to trail 22-12 at the half. Sand Springs extended its lead in the third quarter to hold a 39-21 advantage at the end. Ponca City was able to outscore Sand Springs 13-12 in the final quarter.

The story of the second quarter was turnovers as the Lady Cats were unable to get off many shots from the field. In fact they went scoreless from the field in the second period and the only point scored came with only 11 seconds remaining in the half when Emma Gertken sank a free throw.

Turnovers hurt the Lady Cats throughout the game as they turned the ball over 23 times leading to 19 Sand Springs points. Rebounds were about even with Sand Springs edging Ponca City 32-30 in that category.

It was the final game for two Ponca City seniors, Trinity Regnier and Carlie Badley. To say the least this has been a strange season for Ponca City basketball teams as a month of practice and games were lost due to a COVID-19 school shutdown during December. A number of games were lost due to quarantines affecting other teams. And the recent bad-weather snap cost some games and practice sessions. It had been 20 days since the last Ponca City basketball game.

None of the Lady Cats scored in double figures Thursday. Badley led the Ponca City scorers with nine. Kyra Allison led in rebounds with seven.

Ponca City compiled a 7-8 record. Sand Springs earned the right to play host Tulsa Union with the victory. Both Sand Springs and Union will advance to the Area Tournament next week.
