Lady Cats fall short at Shawnee tournament

SHAWNEE -- The Ponca City Lady Cats softball season came to an end Thursday as they lost twice in the Shawnee Class 6A Regional Tournament.

In the opener Thursday, it was Bixby defeating Ponca City 12-3. And in the second game, the host Shawnee Lady Wolves defeated the Lady Cats 7-2.

Bixby started slowly, leading 1-0 after one inning and 2-1 after three. Then the Lady Spartans added one in the fourth, three in the sixth and six in the seventh inning. Ponca City picked up two runs in the fifth.

Libby Clark started in the circle for Ponca City and pitched seven innings. She gave up 12 hits and 8 earned runs, striking out two and walking seven.

Those who got hits for Ponca City were Allanah Florez, Margaret Blackstar, Sanaya Rabb and Bree Rhea. Rabb’s hit was a double and Rhea hit a home run. Florez and Rhea had one RBI each.

In the third inning, Rhea hit a one-run home run. In the fifth inning, Rabb started things with a double. Rhea then walked and Florez singled to score Karley Alvarez, who was running for Rabb. Later in the inning Emily Harraman scored on an error. Harraman was running for Florez.

Shawnee scored three runs in the third inning of the second game to take a 3-0 lead. It added two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. Ponca City scored a run in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Again Libby Clark was the Ponca City pitcher. She went seven innings in the circle and gave up seven hits and five earned runs while striking out two and walking six. It was the final game for Clark as she is a senior.

Margaret Blackstar had two triples, the only hits the Lady Cats earned. Thirteen Lady Cats went out by the strikeout route.

In the fourth inning Savannah Clark was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Blackstar followed with a triple to score Clark. In the sixth inning, Libby Clark reached base on an error and then Blackstar’s triple scored Harraman, who was running for Clark.

Bixby and Shawnee were to play to close out the tournament in a best of threegame format with the winner advancing to the Class 6A State Tournament.

Ponca City’s season ended with the Lady Cats posting a 10-28 record.
