Should the 2020 football season transpire as presently planned, the Tonkawa Buccaneers and the Blackwell Maroons will have completely different lists of district opponents to contemplate.

The Bucs are assigned to Class A-3, which includes Cashion, Crescent, Hinton, Oklahoma Bible Academy, Oklahoma Christian Academy and Watonga. District A-3 has the distinction of having two teams that played in the last two State Championship games. Tonkawa won the 2018 title and Cashion was the runner-up in 2019, losing to Ringling.

Blackwell, on the other hand, moved from Class 3A to Class 2A. It’s assignment is District 2A-1 which includes Alva, Chisholm, Hennessey, Luther, Newkirk, Oklahoma Christian School and Perry. Two of the district teams, Newkirk and Perry are familiar foes for the Maroons as they are old rivals and have been a part of the Blackwell schedule for awhile.

Tonkawa missed the playoffs for the first time in a long time last season. The new district for the Bucs has two teams other than Cashion who went to the playoffs last year-- Watonga and Oklahoma Bible. Both lost in the opening round.

Four teams in Blackwell’s new district were in the playoffs last year. Chisholm and Luther each lost in the second round, while Perry and Oklahoma Christian School were eliminated in the first round.

Three area teams remain in the district that Tonkawa left. Morrison, Pawnee and Woodland are in District A-6. Also assigned to that district for 2020 are Caney Valley, Chelsea, Chouteau-Mazie and Hominy. Pawnee had a great year in 2019 and made it deep into the playoffs, losing to Cashion in the semifinals. Hominy is the only other A-6 team to participate in the 2019 playoffs, losing in the opening round.

Deer Creek-Lamont is part of District C-3, where it has been for many years. In that eight-man district for 2020 are Bluejacket, Copan, Medford, South Coffeyville, Timberlake, Welch and Wesleyan Christian of Bartlesville. Two teams had 2019 playoff experience. Timberlake made it to the semifinal round where it lost to eventual champion Pond Creek-Hunter. Blue-jacket was eliminated in the first round.
