Coach Jennie Hinterreiter and her Ponca City Lady Cats knew their assignment Tuesday night wasn’t going to be an easy one. They were scheduled for a volleyball match with the defending state champion Bishop Kelley Comets.

When the match at Robson Field House was over, Bishop Kelley had lived up to expectations and swept the Ponca City squad 3-0 in three sets. However in the middle set, Ponca City did themselves proud by hanging with the very good Comets.

The scores of the three sets were 25-11, 25-21 and 25-9.

Bishop Kelley started the match by dominating play in the opening set. The Comets played confidently and were in control from start to finish. They scored the first five points of the match and after Ponca City got within five at 9-4 went on a sevenpoint run to take the score to 16-4. When the Lady Cats got into double digits for the first time, Kelley’s lead was 20-10. From there Bishop Kelley outscored the Lady Cats 5-1 to close out the set.

Set No. 2 was an entirely different story. The two teams basically traded points through the early going. After the score was tied at 10-10, the Lady Cats went on their longest run of the night, building a 17-10 advantage. Kelley slowly, but surely came back and finally got the score tied at 19-19. Ponca City hung around and was within a point at 22-21. but Kelley was able to close out the set with a 25-21 victory.

The Lady Cats started the third set playing well, but their last lead was 4-3. From that point on, Kelley returned to the domination mode and scored the last eight points of the set to win 25-9.

Ponca City will travel to Tulsa to participate in the rugged Bishop Kelley Tournament this weekend. The next home match will be Sept. 16 against Bartlesville.
