Baseball Wildcats top Collinsville

COLLINSVILLE -- The Ponca City Wildcats built up a 3-0 lead Friday over Collinsville and then hung on for a 3-2 victory.

The Wildcats scored a run in the first and added two more in the second. Collinsville scored one in the fourth and another in the fifth. It was the second time the two teams had played, with Collinsville winning the first.

Zack Branstetter put in a good performance on the mound for Ponca City. He started and pitched five innings to pick up the win. In his stint on the mound he allowed three hits and the two runs scored were unearned. He struck out four and walked two. Also pitching were Jaxon Testa and Brody Wicker. Testa allowed one hit and walked two during his one inning stint and Wicker walked one in his one inning of pitching.

Ponca City outhit Collinsville 6-4. Getting hits for the Wildcats were Hunter Freeman (2), Tabron Stanton (2), Grant Harmon and Gavin Cunningham.

In the second inning, Freeman singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Harbeson. Collier Lively walked and both Freeman and Lively scored as Harmon reached base on a fielding error in the Collinsville outfield. Harmon advanced to third in the play, but was unable to score.

In the sixth inning Stanton and Freeman each singled, but no runs were scored. Cunningham got the Wildcats final hit, a single in the seventh.

The win boosts Ponca City’s record to 4-14. The Wildcats were scheduled for district games Monday and Tuesday against Tulsa Union. The Monday game was to be played in Tulsa, while Tuesday’s is set for the Po-Hi baseball field.
