Baseball Wildcats eliminated in Regional

OWASSO -- Broken Arrow Thursday ended the season for the Ponca City Wildcats with a 14-0 victory in the Class 6A Regional Tournament.

The Wildcats earned the right to play on Thursday with a hard fought 6-5 victory over Putnam City Wednesday. Ponca City had lost a close 3-1 decision to Broken Arrow earlier Wednesday.

In Thursday’s game, Broken Arrow broke open the game with five runsin the first inning. The Tigers added five in the second, three in the third and tacked on a final run in the fourth. Broken Arrow outhit the Wildcats 12-3.

Brody WIcker, with a single in the first, Gavin Cunningham, with a single in the third and Nate Harbeson, with a single in the fifth had the Wildcats hits.

Zeke Branstetter started on the mound for Ponca City. He gave up eight hits and four earned runs in two innings of work. Jaxon Testa pitched the third and fourth innings for the Wildcats giving up four hits and three earned runs.

Broken Arrow went on to play eventual district champion Owasso.

In Wednesday’s first game, both Ponca City and Broken Arrow scored their runs in the second inning. In a tightly pitched game, Broken Arrow had five hits to the Wildcats’ two.

Brody Wicker was the Wildcat pitcher and he gave up five hits and two earned runs.

Ponca City’s lone run came on a home run by Tabron Stanton. Wicker had the other Wildcat hit.

In the victory over Putnam City Wednesday, Ponca City scored one in the second, four times in the sixth and one in the seventh. Putnam City had one run in the third two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. Each team had 10 hits.

Grant Harmon had three singles for Ponca City, while Hunter Freeman, Corey Marazas and Nate Harbeson each had two. The other hit was picked up by Gavin Cunningham.

Freeman was the starting pitcher for the Wildcats. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out two and walking five. Marazas pitched 2.2 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs.

In the Wildcat second Marazas singled. Dakotah Krol replaced him asa pinch runner and stole second. He moved to third on an error and scored on another error.

In the four-run sixth, Marazas started things with a single. Noah Parks was used as a pinch runner. Harbeson singled and Cunningham singledto load the bases. Parks was out at the plate as Harmon reached first on a fielders’ choice. Harbeson scored the first run of the inning on a passed ball. Carson Williams reached base on a fielders choice. Harmon scored as Stanton was hit by a pitch and Freeman’s single drove home Wicker and Williams.

In the seventh Brett Haney reached base on an error. Tanner Greenfield replaced Haney as a pinch runner. Harbeson singled and Harmon followed with a single to score Greenfield.

Ponca City’s season is over having compiled a 9-25 record. The Wildcats were playing pretty well at the end of the season.
